Ann Kloehn Log Schoolhouse

Ann Kloehn Schoolhouse

Experience history -- visit the Ann Kloehn Log Schoolhouse and experience school as it might have been in the "olden days". A teacher, dressed in full period attire, greets students at the door of the Log Schoolhouse. A stone and mortar fireplace provides heat. Lessons in reading, writing and arithmetic are taught by the light of candles. Students practice penmanship with quill and ink. Discipline (role played) will be old fashioned and may include a trip to the “Dunce Stool”.

History of the Log Schoolhouse

Ann Kloehn SchoolhouseThousands of students have attended classes at the Log Schoolhouse since it was constructed in 1975 to celebrate America's Bicentennial. A group of parents and community volunteers led by the Appleton Bicentennial Committee decided to construct an authentic log schoolhouse on the Franklin Elementary School grounds. All materials and labor were donated. Students began visiting the school in the spring of 1976.

Today the Log Schoolhouse resides in a more natural setting at the Bubolz Nature Preserve where it was moved in 1998 to accommodate the extensive repairs and updates needed after more than 20 years of use. However, the building and curriculum still remain authentic early Wisconsin.

The Ann Kloehn Log Schoolhouse is named in honor of an individual whose energy and enthusiasm have been a driving force behind the construction and continuation of the Log Schoolhouse.
