AASD and Partners Receive Fast Forward Grant

The Appleton Area School District, partnered with the Menasha Joint School District, Oshkosh Area School District, and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, has received a $112,422.00 grant to further develop English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers and bilingual teachers for the next year.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development awarded the districts a Wisconsin Fast Forward Teacher Training and Development Grant to train up to twenty teachers in an area that is experiencing a statewide shortage.

“The mission of our English Learners and Bilingual Education program is for students to attain English language proficiency, develop high levels of academic achievement in English, and meet the same challenging state academic standards that all children are expected to meet. This grant will help us to fully support and empower our students” said Judy Baseman, Appleton Area School District Superintendent.

The Appleton Area School District serves approximately 1,640 students in our English Learning (EL) program. There are over 55 different languages spoken in our AASD schools with the majority of the non-English speaking students being Hmong and Spanish. Baseman continued, “grants like this help us to ensure a welcoming and inclusive culture for every child every day – in every classroom every day, in every school every day – across the district.

The grant will be used to develop ESL and bilingual teachers within the districts from current teachers and paraprofessional teachers. These teachers will enable the districts to carry out desired dual language instruction and effective EL instructional and co-teaching models. The preparation of highly skilled bilingual individuals by area schools will increase the local economy’s ability to compete effectively in the global marketplace.

In total, $3,553,622.15 was presented to 32 school districts to license more than 370 teachers in various academic areas. The grant is available for throughout 2019 and 2020 and will cover all tuition expenses for teachers to attend classes.
