Field Trips
Bubolz Nature Preserve 9th -11th Basic ski instructions are followed by a leisurely jaunt on our cross country ski trails while exploring animal signs. State Physical Education Standards A.12.1, A.12.4, B.12.1, C.12.2, C.12.4 and Environmental Education State Standards B.4.2, B.4.10, B.8.5, B.8.8.

Weis Earth Science Museum 9th Grade
Science/Math
Four Components:
Radioactive Ratios-Work with the half-life of radioactive minerals to determine the age of rocks using radiometric dating.
Fossils & Figures-Better understand millions and billions by converting Earth history into a calendar year.
How Much is Left?-Learn to read pie charts and graphs to determine how much various mineral resources remain to be mined and calculate how long supplies will last if consumption changes.
Energy Everywhere-Gather data, use statistics and ratios, estimate and make predictions about the various energy resources used around the world.

Weis Earth Science Museum Geology Class Learn about earth cycles and making responsible decisions regarding resources.

FAB LAB at Fox Valley Technical College 9th - 12th The ultimate fieldtrip that extends what students are learning in their science, math, technology, design, etc. into a hands on learning experience in the fabrication lab at FVTC. Make connections in all curricular areas by bringing your students to the Fab Lab to create and experiment, making their own thoughts and ideas reality.

Barlow Planetarium Astronomy Classes Universe: See how everything fits together from Earth to the most distant quasars.​

Barlow Planetarium Astronomy Classes Bad Astronomy: Investigate in a fun and interesting way, the most popular astronomical myths and misconceptions.​

Education trunk loans (with or without a staff educator), Programs in their classroom (HWR would be limited to November-March due to our teaching load, but other may be available otherwise), Teambuilding/leadership training opportunities​.


Student Volunteer Opportunities
Hearthstone Museum 9 -  12 Join our fabulous team of junior docents (tour guides) and learn more about Appleton history and the history of technology. Work with adults and children as you lead them through the past into an exciting time in American history. You could also become a greeter and help us welcome people into the past and work in the lower level hydro-adventure center and gift shop helping guests have a great museum experience.

Heckrodt Wetland Reserve 9 - 12​ Volunteerism, special projects (service learning), Free, Teambuilding/leadership training opportunities​.
1000 Islands Environmental Center 9 - 12​ Volunteer program which is open to anyone 14 years and older.  Younger students can participate in the volunteer program with an adult (parent or teacher) on-site.

​Paper Discovery Center 9 - 12​ SCIENCE / TECH ED - Help demonstrate and explain science concepts during our special events. Summer science series, after school scout programs, events during school winter and spring break.  Our staff identifies, designs, and sets up the hands-on experiments and activities.  The students would need to be trained on how to demonstrate and explain them.  If interested, a student could also help identify, design, and set-up the activities.  Science topics for the program include: sound, sight, electricity, forces, thermal energy, water chemistry, paper testing, color, and flying objects.​

Paper Discovery Center ​9-12 BUSINESS / RETAIL - Organize and help run the gift shop.  This can be done after school or on weekends.  Much of it can even be done by home by looking at catalogues – hard copies or on-line. ​

Paper Discovery Center ​9-12 HISTORY - Assist in special projects, a current example is a history project that is researching various industries along the Fox River – what businesses were located on and relied upon the river and when.  ​

Paper Discovery Center 9-12​ GRAPHIC ARTS / COMMUNICATIONS / TECH ED – Help design flyers and information sheets.

History Museum at the Castle 9-12​ Present and demonstrate historic topics, skills, crafts, or games to elementary students at the Fall – Home & Harvest School Days, the Spring​
History Museum at the Castle 9-12​ Explore what non-traditional educational environments have to offer with an internship or by volunteering at The History Museum.
