Appleton North High School’s one-act production of  Tony Award-winning playwright Mary Zimmerman’s THE WHITE SNAKE recently competed at the Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival state finals held on the campus of U.W. Stevens Point.

Appleton North’s cast and crew of 50 thespians and technicians swept all award categories receiving the top honors from a unanimous judges’ decision. In addition to the prestigious Critic’s Choice award for overall excellence, North was awarded an Outstanding Ensemble Acting Award, an Outstanding Crew Award and a Director’s Award. Students Caroline Holmes and Rachel Sina received Outstanding Acting Awards.

North received an immediate and enthusiastic standing ovation from the packed house at the conclusion of their performance.

Nearly 2,000 high school students participated in this year’s Festival which requires each school to present for evaluation a fully-staged play of no longer than 40 minutes. Less than half of the competing high schools from across Wisconsin qualified for the state competition after having competed in both district and sectional meets held in October and early November.

Each qualifying school then performed for a panel of three judges during the two-day festival that adjudicates the performance and decides on the quality of the production and what honors, if any, should be awarded.

In addition to the various high school productions, a variety of workshops taught by theatre professionals were also available as part of the Theatre Festival.

By receiving the CRITIC’S CHOICE and other awards, Appleton North’s theatre program is recognized as one of the best high school theatre programs in Wisconsin.

North has received the top award CRITIC’S CHOICE for the past eighteen consecutive years; the only school in the history of the state competition to achieve such a distinction marking North Theatre as one of the best high school theatre programs in Wisconsin.
