As Dr. John Mielke resigns; the AASD seeks new school board member
Posted on 05/23/2017
At Monday's Board of Education meeting the Board regretfully accepted Dr. John Mielke’s resignation from the Board of Education effective at the end of June.

For 26 years John has served the Appleton Area School District as an outstanding Board member. In John’s resignation letter he stated the following:  “My reason for resigning at this time is to be able to give younger people the chance to serve on this Board.”

While we will miss John’s leadership on the Board, he will continue to be an advocate  and an innovative force for children of all ages across our community. We will develop plans to celebrate John’s tremendous leadership in the weeks ahead.

NOTICE OF SCHOOL BOARD VACANCY AND APPOINTMENT PROCESS

The process for filling Dr. Mielke's vacancy will begin Wednesday, May 24th. We are seeking a citizen to assume Dr. Mielke's place for his term that expires on April 23, 2018. Our board members are elected—or occasionally appointed—to be leaders and champions for public education in their states and communities.

If you are interested in working hand-in-hand with AASD administration to prepare our students for their future, we encourage you to submit a Letter of Interest. The Letter should include:

1. The name, residential address, and telephone number of the potential appointee.
2. The reason(s) that the candidate wants to serve on the Board.
3. The individual’s qualifications and experience relevant to the position.
4. Any items that the individual believes should be the School Board’s top priorities in connection with improving student achievement.
5. The individual’s general views regarding role of the Board and role of the Superintendent and other administrative leaders.
6. The candidate’s availability for Board duties.

A Declaration of Eligibility to Hold Office form also needs to be completed.

To ensure consideration, we must receive the above to the Scullen Leadership Center prior to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

The goal of the AASD Board of Education is:
"The Board is committed to the education of all students as appropriate to the best of their individual abilities; to a constant awareness of the concerns and desires of the whole
community regarding the quality and performance of the school system; and to the
employment of a Superintendent and staff who will see that the District maintains a position
as an outstanding school system and under whose leadership school personnel will carry out
the policies of the Board with imagination and dedication."

We encourage citizens that value public education to apply. School boards function best when there are dedicated members from different walks of life, with different perspectives, but who all value and support our public school staff and families.

Your involvement will directly affect our over 1,800 staff and 16,000+ students.

We look forward to working with you for the betterment and advancement of the Appleton Area School District.
